The NFL franchise tag deadline was uneventful compared to previous years, as only two players were tagged this offseason. This marked the lowest number of players to receive the franchise or transition tag in an offseason since 1994, per multiple reports.

Scouting Combine behind us, the next big step in the NFL offseason is free agency. Tuesday marks the next big deadline, as teams have until 4:00 p.m. Eastern to designate Franchise or Transition Tag players.

Dallas signed defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa before the franchise tag deadline Tuesday and Minnesota declined to give the tag to quarterback Sam Darnold, clearing the way for him to hit the open market next week.

A franchise tag is a one-year deal that keeps a player from entering free agency, which begins on March 12 at 4 p.m. ET. The two sides can continue working on a longer term deal until July 15 at 4 p.m. ET. If extensions aren't agreed upon by then, the player will compete one year under the franchise tag.

ET deadline came and went Tuesday with only two NFL players receiving the franchise tag: Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins and Kansas City Chiefs right guard Trey Smith.

Unrestricted free agents are eligible Monday to commence talks with other teams. Contracts and trades, including Saturday’s of Deebo Samuel to Washington, cannot become official until next Wednesday at 1 p.m., although the 49ers can re-sign their own free agents before then.
