Schmetzer has been Head Coach of the Sounders since 2016 and is the man who led them to their greatest triumph in 2022, their CONCACAF Champions League win. Seattle-born and bred, the 62-year-old played for a number of local teams and coached Sounders previously when they were a USL club.

FIFA has announced a $1billion prize fund for the 2025 Club World Cup. World football’s governing body has not yet confirmed how the money will be distributed between the 32 participating teams, but explained a “solidarity” pot for clubs outside the competition would also be introduced.

The competition will gain the spotlight between 15 June and 13 July 2025, as 32 teams from across the world meet in the USA for the first competition of its kind. The World Cup is designed to bring the most successful club teams from the six international confederations AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, OFC and UEFA together every four years.

The first Women’s Club World Cup has been moved from 2026 to 2028 and FIFA has confirmed a new annual tournament, the Champions Cup.
